Why Red Paint Fades Faster Than Other Colors (And What You Can Do About It)

« Back Teran Marsell | Published on August 15th, 2014

Beauford classic-007There is no denying the visual appeal of a bright red vehicle. Red vehicles catch everyone’s eye and have a certain style and personality. Approximately 10% of all car owners choose red for their rides and if there is a link between car color and personality, this might indicate that you are spontaneous, fun, energetic and quick thinking!

So, we all agree that red cars are fun and exciting…but one thing you will want to be aware of if you decide to purchase one is that the paint is more likely to appear faded faster than some other choices of paint colors. There is some debate as to why this is – and whether red paint actually fades faster OR if our eyes just see the fading of the red because it has more pigment than other colors (like black or white). Regardless of the science behind paint fading, most experts agree that this fading depends largely on how much the individual vehicle is exposed to sunlight and damaging UV rays. And most also agree that red paint looks faded after a few years of general wear and tear.

If you own a red vehicle or are hoping to in the near future, there are many things you can do to significantly extend the life of your paint job.

1.     Think about where you park your car

It’s pretty simple, protecting your car (and its paint) from sunlight, rain, and other environmental irritants by parking it in a garage or covered area keeps the paint looking new longer and helps it resist fading. If you do not have a garage or carport, you can also get a car cover for your vehicle. Covers made today generally provide UV and heat protection.

2.     Cleaning and care of your vehicle

Making sure that you wash your car frequently and then following the wash with a wax polish will also significantly increase the life of your paint job (and keep your red paint from fading). You should also use contact free car washing when possible (no brushes that touch your vehicle and can do damage).

3.     Vehicle Wrap

Adding a vehicle wrap to your vehicle provides the ultimate paint protection. For example, a clear vinyl wrap provides this paint protection and is impossible to see. So, you can enjoy the red paint job without any worry of fading. This kind of wrap keeps your original paint job looking brand new, which is great for the look of the car AND for the resale value. You can never match the original manufacturer paint job – and you will keep it looking it’s best with a clear vinyl vehicle wrap.
