Go to any trade show, open house, or event and you’ll see companies giving away promotional products. You’ve thought about doing the same thing but haven’t been able to justify the expense. Do those things actually work? How do you know what items to giveaway? Maybe it works for people who already know your company, but what about people who are only hearing about you for the first time? Does giving a promo product to prospect actually drive new business?
A study by the Advertising Specialty Institute says, “YES!”
The ASI study asked consumers how likely they were to do business with a company they hadn’t used before after receiving a promotional item. Over one-third (36%!) said they were more likely to choose that business in the future.
However, this number varied based on the type of product gifted.
Only 23% of people given something health or safety related said they would choose to do business with that company in the future. Drinkware, calendars, and writing instruments would convince 31% of people to choose that business.
T-shirts (38%), flash drives (39%), and bags (43%) all weighed in above average when it came to convincing recipients to choose a particular company in the future.
But a whopping 48% of people given outerwear (stuff like jackets, aprons, hoodies, ponchos, and robes) said they were more likely to choose that business in the future. It’s because these kinds of products are truly useful and can even establish a sense of familiarity, trustworthiness, and comfort between a consumer and business.
And if you give away products people will actually use, you’ll get even more eyes on your brand.
When it comes to marketing, word of mouth is (and will probably remain) the most effective referral system for generating leads and sales. When someone sees another person wearing or using one of your promotional products, it familiarizes them with your brand and acts a personal referral – even if the person with the product doesn’t mean it to be one. People assume that a person won’t wear branded items if they don’t like the thing it’s promoting. Use that to your advantage.
Promotional products are relatively inexpensive.
Giant conglomerates aren’t the only ones who use and benefit from branded promotional items. Even small businesses use them with success. Heck, even tiny college organizations, high school groups, and community service volunteers are able to pull together enough money to print out a few t-shirts that promote their group or cause.
