When a seemingly minor element has damaged your vehicle’s windshield, you have to consider more than just the consequences it’ll have on your well being. Every state has certain laws regarding broken windshield glass, and Nevada is no exception.
Earlier last year, the Supreme Court ruled that motorists in Nevada would be stopped and pulled over if law enforcement officials spotted a cracked windshield. This ruling came after a driver was stopped in Nevada for having a crack in their windshield glass. Now, it’s illegal to drive with a cracked windshield in Nevada.
One of the main reasons that infamous case was taken to court was because of the fact that a windshield crack can obstruct a driver’s vision while on the road. Obstructed vision while driving can lead to the risk of getting into an accident.
Depending on the location of a windshield crack, it can create another type of blind spot and impede your view of a significant traffic light or sign, increasing your chances of getting into a collision. Besides the damage this will cause on your health and that of others, you’ll have to worry about your driving record, too.
Sometimes, a small crack on the windshield can actually cause a larger crack to form if it goes unrepaired. Over time, a small crack can get filled with debris, which will build up and even get stuck inside the crack, ultimately making a windshield replacement necessary.
That larger crack will put you at risk of a having a completely shattered window, too, which is why you can even get stopped for a small crack. This can easily be caused by a chip formed by damage from a rock or from several small breaks in a windshield. Stay clear from driving behind dump trucks that can put you at risk of getting your glass hit by rocks.
It’s even worse when you have a pit in your windshield, which is basically when a piece of glass is blatantly (or conspicuously) missing! This will call the attention of any nearby law enforcement official.
Rarely, a “stress crack” can appear on your windshield. This type of crack is formed by a fluctuation in temperature. The car can be overheated for several reasons like being in the sun for too long, and when the cold AC is turned on, that can cause a shock, which then turns into a crack.
This can also happen when the vehicle is contrarily too cold and exposed to heat. These cracks will just appear to be a straight line without any sign of the impact.
Getting slammed with a traffic violation is never fun for anyone. Aside from having to worry about your driving record, you’ll have to deal with heavy fines. Along with a steep ticket price to pay, you’ll probably have to worry about paying for a new windshield, too.
