Whether your vehicle wrap and graphics are going to promote your business or your own personal brand, they’re going to represent you. So of course you want to make sure that you’re projecting quality, competence, and awesomeness. But before you go ahead and pick a shop, you’re going to want to ask a few essential questions to make sure that the team you choose is capable of doing the quality job you want.
What kind of vinyl do you use?
Find out whether the shop you’re talking to uses brand name or private label vinyl. You’ll want to choose a shop that uses name brand names like Arlon, Avery Dennison, Oracal, 3M, or MACtac because each of these companies invests their resources to develop superior products, test them extensively, and guarantee their performance.
Private label or off-brand vinyl may save you (or the shop you’re talking to) money, but there’s no guarantee as to the vinyl’s quality, consistency, or performance. Economy brands can vary from roll to roll, which means that it many not work well – even if the shop assures you that it has in the past. If you want your wrap to last, you’re going to want your shop using brand name vinyl.
Is your vinyl meant to be used on vehicles?
To the average person, vinyl’s going to look pretty much the same. But your shop should use a vinyl that is specifically formulated to fit any shape or curve on your vehicle. Generally, this will be cast vinyl. Other kinds of vinyl, like calendared or sign vinyl are designed specifically for flat surfaces and shouldn’t be used on vehicles. If you try to apply them to a curved surface, they’ll fail a whole lot sooner. Even if they’re using brand name vinyl, you need to be aware that big brands manufacture all different kinds of vinyl, so you also need to make sure that they’re choosing the right variety.
How much experience do you have with vinyl installation?
Experience matters in this industry so be wary of any shop who gets put off by this question. Wrap installation takes skill, and like any skill, it takes time to develop. Installation specialists who spend years working with these materials will have an innate sense for what’s going to work and what won’t, how your design will look once it’s transferred from paper to your vehicle and will make sure it’s going to look good before they print your design. They should care about the details and take pride in the finished product.
